We talk a lot about what you should do if you get into an accident but what if you just simply break down? First and foremost you want to make sure you are safe if you are stranded in your vehicle. Telesis Collision Center offers some break down safety tips so you know what to do if your vehicle breaks down unexpectedly.

1 – PULL OVER

If possible, pull to the side of the road or to a safe area. It’s always best to get to the right shoulder of the freeway. If that’s not possible and you are forced to pull onto the left shoulder you’ll want to make sure you stay as far over as possible – away from traffic.

2 – HAZARD LIGHTS

Turn on your hazard lights to immediately notify surrounding drivers that your vehicle is having problems and that they need to pay close attention. Turning on your hazard lights decreases your chances of getting hit by an oncoming vehicle and turning a little “uh oh” into a big “OMG”.

3 – STAY IN YOUR VEHICLE

Although you may want to get out and assess the issues, the safest place for you is inside your vehicle. If you are in a safe place and feel it is necessary to exit your vehicle you will want to make sure to raise your hood to alert passerby’s that help is needed.

4 – CALL FOR HELP

While remaining in your vehicle you will want to call for help whether this be to a tow company or to a roadside assistance program like AAA. You will want to make sure you have all of your insurance and registration information with you when they arrive. If you feel that the area you have broken down in is dangerous or you feel you are in imminent danger, you will want to call the police and stay in your vehicle with the windows up and doors locked until help arrives.

5 – BE PREPARED

It’s always a good idea to have a few items in your vehicle at all times in case of an emergency. A first aid kit can be very handy. You can make one yourself or find one online or in a store like Costco or Sam’s Club. A few snacks are always helpful, especially if you have little ones with you often. In addition to these supplies the automotive kit staples would consist of reflective triangles, flags or flares and jumper cables.

We hope you don’t have a break down but if you do it’s always best if you have planned ahead and can deal with it safely. If the Telesis Collision Center team can help you in any way please reach out.
