Did you know that Halloween is consistently one of the top 3 days for pedestrian injuries and fatalities? Scary, but true!

Let’s take a quick look at some things you can do this Halloween to keep yourself and those around you as safe as possible.

Driver Safety

Drive SLOWLY!

As we all know, reaction time is critical in avoiding any type of accident. To give yourself more time to react to an unexpected little one popping out in to the street or across a driveway that was clear just a second ago, just slow down!

Use those Blinkers

Due to the irregular neighborhood traffic that occurs on Halloween you should make sure to use your turn signals and also your hazard lights if you need to pull over to drop off or pick up your children. By communicating with other drivers on the road it makes it easier for everyone to decipher who is going where and eliminates confusion and chaos.

Stay OFF your Cell Phone

Taking your eyes off the road is already EXTREMELY dangerous. Add in small children running around excitedly and you’ve got yourself the perfect storm. PLEASE do not drive distractedly! While driving…Don’t email. Don’t text. Don’t dial. Don’t touch your cell phone or even look at it. Whatever it is, it can wait for you to safely pull over.

Don’t Drink and Drive!

Over ¼ of the fatalities on Halloween happen due to a crash involving a driver or motorcyclist with a blood alcohol content (BAC) above the legal limit. We urge you to designate a sober driver if you plan on celebrating the holiday with alcohol. If you have been drinking and didn’t arrange ahead of time for a ride, we beg you to use a taxi, Uber, Lyft or simply ask a friend or family member to help you out.

Trick or Treater Safety

WALK not Run

Remind your little ones to walk from house to house and to stay only on the sidewalk.

Beware of Driveways

Always slow down near driveways to make sure that no one is pulling in or out.

Stay OFF your Cell Phone

We know there is such a thing as distracted driving. There is also a hazard in being on the phone and walking, especially at night. Please refrain from using your cell phone unless it’s an emergency.

Wear Bright Colors &/or Reflective Tape on Your Costumes

Making sure you are visible to motorists and others is very important.

By following these simple Halloween Safety Tips, you will improve your chances for a fun and safe Halloween.
